My doctor gave me an order months ago, “Walk for forty minutes a day, this is non-negotiable.” In the cold weather, the treadmill is my friend. In this warm weather, it is a delight to walk by the sea.
In New Bedford, we have a special place, once a farm that belonged to Bud’s Howland ancestors, then a military fort built by Robert E. Lee before the Civil War, and now a city park. It is called Fort Taber. The land juts out into the ocean and it is a magnificent place to walk.
We went out tonight to see the moon, but there was a coastal layer rolling in. It turned everything a lovely soft gray.
You can imagine this scene with the wind blowing and kites flying and sea gulls riding the air.
There was glory erupting from the sky, but the clouds pretty much shut it out.
Except for where it broke through.
This is the Merchant Marine Memorial pier. We were walking along and suddenly the lamps went on.
Forty minutes later, we clambered back into the van. Salt air is so great. I love wind and weather when walking by the ocean. I never get tired of this park, and it is so close to our house.
I hope more people find out about New Bedford, because it is an undiscovered jewel of a city.
