Are you the Patricia Burkhalter who was married to John?
I Googled Cresta Ola and picked a tagged comment randomly. I was stationed at Clark with John Burkhalter whose father-in-law owned casa blanca and whose sons were developing Cresta Ola in 1963.

I just lost my older brother to cancer of the brain and that gave me the impetus to make some sense of the hundreds of pictures and slides that I have so that my children nand grandchildren don't just trash them but will have some sense of what heritage they have, mongrel though it might be.

Among the slides and photos were many taken at Cresta Ola which is what led to the google hit and to the blog. My wife, children and I enjoyed our stays there immensely.

To get back to the reason for my virginal foray into blogging. I wonder what became of John and Pat Burkhalter who showed my wife Edith and I many kindnesses during our two year plus tour at Clark Air Base.

I can't remember when I've read anything quite so beautiful, poetic and touching as this......it was like listening to a piece of music that brought tears to your eyes while listening to it.
Thank you for posting it and for including it in your blog. .

My daughter found this--I don't know how. I am Bessie's niece, the daughter of her sister Mary. Thank you for this. I will forward to our clan.

I started reading your stories the other day, Kathleen, when Gi pointed me to your blog. Your stories are beautiful, and wonderfully written. They evoke a strong sense of family; and somehow I can picture what you describe.

Please keep posting your stories, they are a treat!

I will always remember the good parts of those summer days, the sun sets, the ocean view and and even those moonlit nights until the cold set in and I remember what dear Father Malatesta OSB, my Theology professor in college wrote me. He said"You come from the tropics and you won't like how cold it can get in New England." But oh how beautiful the summer and fall months can win your heart in New Bedford.

One of my favorite Hans Christian Andersen tales - I knew the reference exactly before reading. What a beautiful story, Kathleen! Like seeing a rose petal. Or for me, like looking at a crucifix and knowing that His troubles were so much worse than my own. Beautiful story! Thank you for sharing...
